new master suite

My parents just ripped up the carpet in their bedroom in exchange for some new wood floors. I know my Mom just bought a red rug. This is my design for their new master suite.

It all starts with this beautiful antique Italian bed.

gorgeous red rug and simple nightstands

At the foot of the bed rest two stools upholstered in a very pretty blossom print.

My parents are different in every single way. I gave them his and her chairs with very different personalities. Lets not forget the lovely red side table.

I couldn't decide between the red love seat or tan. I'm leaning toward the red. The side table is doubled up and used as a coffee table. The light fixture is a nice combination of old and new.

Who doesn't dream about winning the lottery? Well, I dream about it and then I dream about using the money to design spaces for my family members. I thought about what kind of bedroom I would give my brother. I want Michael's room to be masculine and casual. It needs to be clean and not too fussy. I want it to speak to his personality and reflect his hobbies.

This is a no-frills bed. The bedding is clean and the green bench at the foot of the bed adds a pop of color.

I like this modern desk. Michael is very tidy. I know he would keep this space clean. Michael has done a lot of traveling. This globe lamp is perfect for him. I love this lamp. I think he would too.

There is nothing that says beach casual like grass cloth wallpaper. I have a bit of a soft spot for it. The tree stump side table is the perfect accompaniment to the modern occasional chair. Michael loves camping with his friends and I think of sitting around the camp fire on tree stumps.

I imagine a big collage wall. It would look great backed by the grass cloth wallpaper. There would be an assortment of travel posters, personal photos, and interesting pieces like the impala horns.

An antique American flag would hang over the bed. It is a cool piece of American history and a nod to his career as a Marine. The modern leather chair is so cool. What man doesn't want a leather chair in their space? The library sconces flank the bed.

The dresser and nightstands are from the same collection. I felt like there was so much going on in the space that a few cohesive items would be nice. I think my personal style is a little more eclectic than Michael's taste. I tried to reign it in a little.

Operation: Fun for Free

I am making a conscious effort to have fun for free. I am a lover of interesting and useless facts. I decided that I was going to look up little tidbits of information about famous authors. I printed them out and headed to the library to hide them in books. I'm excited about all those unsuspecting readers finding these little gems while reading.

Here are some of the most interesting things I learned:

Mark Twain never graduated from elementary school. He educated himself in public libraries as an adult while working as a journalist.

Charles Dickens suffered from epilepsy and made some of his characters-like Oliver Twist's brother- epileptics. Modern doctors are amazed at the medical accuracy of his descriptions of this malady.

When he was young, Jules Verne studied to be a lawyer, but he loved the theater and spent his time writing. When his family found out, they cut off his funding. For a time Verne even tried working as a stockbroker, but he eventually started making money as an author.

Lord of the Flies was rejected by twenty-one publishers before being accepted by Faber and Faber.

One of William Golding's hobbies was researching and exploring the myth of the Loch Ness monster.

Louise May Alcott was the 1st woman registered to vote in Concord, New Hampshire.

Thank goodness for gift cards. I was given a Pinkberry gift card at work. You know what that means - free ice cream!
